How to Calculate a VAT Refund for shopping abroad
Calculating a VAT refund for tax-free shopping abroad is a straightforward process. As you might know, VAT (value added tax, also called sales tax) is a consumption tax imposed on goods and services. When you take items back to your home country, you have the right for the paid taxes to be returned to you.
Keep track and save your receipts and identify the total amount of VAT you’ve paid during your shopping spree. Whether in person, or online.
If the VAT is 21% in a given country, the math will tell you, that if you spend 100 dollar on, let’s say shoes, your VAT refund is not 21% of the purschase price. Why?
Most people assume that because a country charges for example a 20% VAT rate, they will get 20% back from their purchase amount; but that’s not the right calculation. It is calculated in this format: 100 Euro + 20% = 120 Euro, but 120 Euro – 20% = 96 Euro (and not 100, the price without VAT).
VAT Refund Calculation
Instead, 120 Euro – 16.66% = 100 Euro (the amount without VAT).
Another example:
Price without VAT = 500
500 x 1,20 = 600 inc VAT
100 (VAT) / 600 x 100 = 16,7% VAT refund, with a 20% VAT rate.
You can use the above VAT Refund calculator to do this math for you. It will easily tell you the refund percentage on the purschase price. Also, sort by country to see where it is best to buy your items for the biggest tax refund.
The tax-refund amount will be lower after administration fees when using an intermediary such as Global Blue or Planet Payment. The refund will be even lower if you go for cash payments, and lower than that for a cash payment in the currency of choice.
Now in most countries, the process of getting your refund is a terrible difficult and slow process, that these intermediaries are depending on the country, worth they money.
